Sen. Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) said that Doug Jones, the newly-elected Senator from Alabama, would not be seated until after the Senate’s current session. This is an obvious ploy to ram the Trump/GOP Tax Scam through the Senate while they currently hold the slimmest majority of 51-49 (assuming that Sen. Corker of Tennessee votes “no” as he did on the original SEnate version of the bill).
By allowing Jones to be sworn in and seated, the vote would be 50-50 with little room for a single GOP defecting Senator, such as Maine’s Susan Collins or Arizona’s Jeff Flake.
In 2010, the Democrats tried to rush the Affordable Care Act/Obamacare through the Senate while they could preserve their 60 vote majority during the time period just after Scott Brown was elected as the GOP Senator from Massachusetts and before he could be sworn in.
As Crooked Media points out: “Senate Republicans unleashed a brief, preemptive uproar about this idea, but to their rescue came Sen. Jim Webb (D-VA). ‘It is vital that we restore the respect of the American people in our system of government and in our leaders,’ Webb wrote in an official statement. ‘To that end, I believe it would only be fair and prudent that we suspend further votes on health care legislation until Senator-elect Brown is seated’.”
After Sen. Webb stopped Obamacare from being rammed through the Senate, McConnell, who was the Senate’s Minority Leader at the time, stated: “One concern I know a number of you had about the outcome of this election would be whether the new senator would be seated soon,” McConnell told reporters at a Capitol briefing on January 20, 2010. “I am convinced now that no gamesmanship will be played by the other side with regard to future votes in the Senate, thanks to Senator Jim Webb of Virginia. He’s made it clear that he will not participate in any additional health care votes prior to Senator Brown being sworn in….Let’s honor the wishes of the people of Massachusetts and move forward.”
Fast forward to today, and McConnell refuses to honor the wishes of the people of Alabama. Just a tad hypocritical, Mitch.
Tuesday night, after the Alabama senatorial election was called for Doug Jones, Massachusetts Sen Elizabeth Warren tweeted:
If anything, Alabamians fought hard against the bigoted, alleged child-molester Roy Moore. By not seating Doug Jones immediately, McConnell is not honoring the Alabama electorate but functioning as a tyrant outside of the regular order of the Senate.
Complicit with McConnell is every spineless GOP Senator who is not screaming, as did Sen. Webb, that it is vital to restore the respect of the American people in our system of government and in our leaders. It would be only fair and prudent that we suspend further votes until Senator-elect Jones is seated.
While GOP Senators are not doing anything to carry out the will of the Alabama voters, we can.
We demand that our Senators Reed and Whitehouse take leadership roles and bring the Senate proceedings to a grinding halt by withholding consent on a daily basis until Jones is seated.
