Indivisible RI Rhode Island, Winners Loswers, Government Shutdown

Indivisible RI RhodeIsland, CHIP, Dreamers, DACAAccording to Think Progress: Congressional Democrats’ principled stand to protect thousands of young DREAMers lasted all of two days. According to Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY), the Senate voted in favor of a bill that reopened the government and funded it for three weeks. This compromise was secured on the assumption that Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) will be something he has never been before: a man of his word.
We have all heard the words coming from Trump (“The government needs a good shutdown”) and Eric, his son (the shutdown is “a good thing for us” politically).  They got what they wanted and something even more important: making the Dems crack faster than a dozen eggs hitting the ground in a Stop & Shop parking lot.
Let’s face it, post-shutdown, the Dems lost once Trump tweeted that they were for a boatload of illegal immigration and were against paying the military. We know that this is not true. The Dems were out to protect DACA recipients ever since Trump pulled the rug out from under them September 5th and said Congress would come up with a fix well-before his Executive Order’s March 5, 2018 deportation start date.
The GOP-controlled Congress refused to take up the DACA issue ever since.
Congressional GOPers also allowed the Children’s Health Insurance Program’s funding to expire and refused to negotiate its renewal funding since September 30th.
Blend the three issues (DACA, military payroll, CHIP) into one unified, though specious, GOP message and it turns into: “The obstructionist Democrats are refusing to pay military salaries and children’s health insurance all because they want to open our country up for all illegal immigrants crossing our borders.”
The evangelical VP Mike Pence while visiting our troops near the Syrian border told our troops that the Dems are refusing to pay them. Truth is, Sen. Claire McCaskill (D-MO) immediately after the shutdown vote occurred, introduced a bill to keep our military funded during the shutdown. Why would Pence publicly lie? Because he probably was told to do so, and the negative press against the Dems would be priceless.
DREAMERS are not your border crossing illegal immigrants. Why would the GOP make such a deceitful statement? To discredit the Dems and earn brownie points with their base.
As for the CHIP program which the GOP held hostage since September, it was a ploy for them to say that the nefarious Dems were against children. We know this is not the case as they have been fighting to get CHIP funding since it the program expired.
The bottom line is that the GOP is counting on one thing: division within our ranks. Especially when you consider that they are facing a potential Blue Wave on November 6th.
Yes, it stinks that the DACA can has been kicked down the road.
But you know what stinks more? The Dems messaging. Before they participate in a government shutdown, they have to a clear proactive message which will blindside and blunt a message attack (against children, don’t want to pay the military, illegal immigration) on them by the crafty GOP.
Hopefully, this has been a wakeup call as they barrel toward their next GOP showdown on February 8th.
Will they have a unified message by then?  We hope so.
Today’s Calls: Senators Reed and Whitehouse
Please express your disappointment that they did not support DACA at this time by surrendering to the GOP…but be sure to thank them for finally securing a six-year CHIP funding.
